The last time I visited The Columns at Six Penny Farm was for Kayleigh and Brandon’s engagement session. It was as beautiful as I remembered with a breathtaking view of Massanutten Mountain sitting nonchalantly to the west. While the vendors bustled around outside, the bride and her maids prepped in the upstairs of the home while the guys enjoyed an epic man cave in the basement. Once all the pieces fell into place, Kayleigh, escorted by her father, met Brandon at the alter and vowed to love one another forever. The evening that followed included yard games, cocktails, creative entrances by the wedding party, a delicious meal, icing to the face, and lots of dancing and laughter.

Jason and Allie invited their friends and family to celebrate their wedding day in a nature-lovers heaven. This lush oasis, Montfair Resort Farm, is tucked away in the mountains of Crozet, Virginia, just outside of Charlottesville. There was a calming peace over the whole event that not even a one hour rain delay could rattle. Guests joined together to witness Allie and Jason make sincere, tearful vows to each other while fog hugged the mountainous layers of blue behind them. Following a paper lantern-lit pathway through the woods led guests to cocktail hour where canoes were available for cruising and drinks were served in mason jars designed by Allie’s cousin. The reception was filled to the brim with personal touches of love. As I walked away that evening, sounds of dancing, laughter, music, and celebration under the canopy of trees faded into the distance behind me.

Hawthorn-Gunderson Wedding

I stopped my car on a country road to take a photo of the sign pointing to the wedding. It was hand drawn rainbow colored bubble letters on cardboard, duct taped to the post of a road sign. “She’s in love with the boy…” I could hear Trisha Yearwood’s x’s and o’s faintly from a neighbors garage. On cue, the breeze slowly moved the buttery thick summer air as guests arrived at Paul and Maya’s home, the location of their wedding. Family members and close friends were all contently busy with tasks and everyone had a role, including the flower girl, Maya’s daughter Anna, who took me on a tour of the yard as she picked her own basket of flowers. She patiently and accurately described the flowers, trees and other plants to me, calling them all by name. With a rainbow color scheme set for the day, it was only appropriate for a cake cutting thunderstorm followed by a brilliant rainbow that stretched over the horizon. This wedding is one for the books. A genuine display of what it means to gather in love, family, friendship and fellowship and not things and things and things. Thanks for leading inspiring lives Maya and Paul and so many congrats to you both.

Anderson Wedding

Justin and Amisha declared their vows in front of a postcard backdrop complete with Massanutten Mountain, every changing skies and lush greens in all directions. Family and friends gathered to witness the couple seal their love with a kiss and then dance the night away alongside their two sweet daughters. Among the many highlights of the day were the best man’s Fresh Prince of Bel-Air inspired speech, the double (double) chocolate chunk wedding cake, the secret handshake of the groom and his daughter, the post-ceremony mini-Dixie Cup champagne shot, copper flower centerpieces handmade by the bride’s dad, and the send off under a sea of glow sticks. Congrats Amisha and Justin and cheers to many years of happiness!

Tilson-Williams Wedding

Misty and Adam wed on the top of a hill with gorgeous views at friends home in Rockingham County. The sky threatened droplets most of the day but the clouds carried them away. Green grass, blue ridges, the sound of leaves blowing in the breeze and a roaring bonfire were just a few of the natural touches that made their day so wonderful.

Deen Wedding

Blair and Chris wed on a beautiful fall day on the sound side of Topsail Beach. They were surrounded by family and friends eager to celebrate their union. Love filled the air along with a breeze only the ocean can deliver and the calls of the beach: seagulls, slapping water and palm tree leaves brushing across one another. Guests enjoyed a delicious southern meal complete with shrimp and grits, prime rib, corn bread and green beans. The night carried on with clanking glasses and serious dance moves.

Kauffman Wedding

Bobby and Julianne got married at the James Madison University Arboretum on a day that threatened rain with hovering gray skies. Ducks and squirrel played in the distance as guests began to gather under a tent by the pond for the wedding ceremony. As Julianne’s father walked her down the aisle and under the shelter, raindrops fell from the sky. Guests took communion and sat contently with smiles as the couple made promises of forever, sealed with a kiss. The reception was the longest and most lively I’ve witnessed with six hours planned for dinner and dancing. (!) The night went perfectly and new memories were made with the merging of a new family. The happiness was so contagious you could spot the hotel staff, wedding coordinators, videographer and DJ dancing and laughing while working. And then, a requested Metallica song played and I thought surely the banquet room would collapse on itself. The entire room went WILD and somehow the blow-up guitar survived the crowd. It was a sight to see and I’m happy I could be there to document this joyous occasion. Congratulations Julie and Bobby!

March-Lawrence Wedding

Kyle and Whitney’s wedding took place at Cross Keys Barn on one of the clearest, brightest, bluest days of the summer. Their friends and family gathered for pre-ceremony yard games, cocktails and mingling – a good ol’ fashioned backyard-style get-together that is trademark of Harrisonburg. And as if the crisp blue skies weren’t a perfect enough backdrop, Massanutten Mountain and Fridley’s Gap (where Kyle proposed) perched perfectly in the near distance. The ingredients of a postcard. The day carried on as the roar of chatting and laughter among friends grew. There was a happy buzz all around the grounds, in the barn, on the deck, in the front and the back and in every nook and cranny. When I left that evening, I could hear the laughter and feet stomping to the beat of DJ Ryan Clark. I could smell firewood burning as people sat and mingled under the stars. I could see glow-in-the-dark frisbees zooming by the distant mountain peaks. And…I could feel the love. Congratulations on a perfect wedding day, Kyle & Whitney.

Murray Wedding

Dawn and Scott got married in their backyard’s backyard. That’s right, if you walk through the backyard, just over a family-built foot bridge, passed the territorial rooster and the curious goats, the trees will open up to a beautiful panorama view. Right there on that patch of land, you’ll find all the joys of Fulks Run: mountains, corn fields, green grass and a flowing river. A beautiful location for a wedding celebration. Dawn was escorted down the path by her two sons and she was spilling with joy when she met her groom. Smiles filled the tent from the first moment to the last. The night ended with a friends and family bluegrass jam session, lots of laps through the corn field and a dip in the river.

VanMeter Wedding

Ike and Melissa married on a friend’s farm just outside of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The day promised and delivered scattered showers but it politely waited until after the ceremony and most of the photos. As Melissa met Ike at the alter, a rooster crowed in the distance, the guests spirits lifted with the breeze and a marriage was sealed with a kiss. During the reception the rain clouds parted, yard games commenced and there was a whole lot of shakin’ on the dance floor. As it should be.
